LeSean: The Cartoon Connection
DescriptionLeSean Thomas is the the connection between the East and West in the animation world, living part of his life in Seoul, South Korea and part in Los Angeles, California. I met LeSean outside of a club after a fight broke out. I think his first words to me were "Man, did you see that?" We were introduced by my friend Anna, "aka ABC, aka Rockst*r." Please remember all variations of her name as I will probably refer to her often! ha. She was my adventure partner in Korea for a couple years, climbing mountains and bypassing security guards.
But I digress.
LeSean is a producer, director, animator, comic book artist, writer, character designer who has worked on projects like The Boondocks, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and Black Dynamite (currently). Check out his work on deviantART here. He also has a series coming out about his experiences in Seoul called Seoul Sessions on Creative Control TV.
I really liked interviewing LeSean because he has so many character stats that I would like to have myself! For one, he's a cool guy who has an anime art library. I thought those two were mutually exclusive events. Now I know better. He's also a man of action and gets projects done. Many people go through life wanting to do things without doing anything. He is not one of those people. And, most importantly, he has courage. He has the courage to drop everything and move to a country he knew next to nothing about in order to improve himself.
Watch the interview and hear about how he got to South Korea and became an integral part of the animation world.
A great surprise was that he started talking about the same things Stephen Stohn did on my first interview. He started talking about the virtues of failure and how it's something important, not something to run from. LeSean is only my third interview but I'm already starting to see what I wanted to find around the world: a pattern. What do great people have in common? Failure seems to be one so here's a link to LeSean's TEDx talk in Seoul.
I could probably write forever about this guy but I'll save something since I'll probably be seeing him soon in LA after my Zombie Run.
I'll leave you with some failure quotes:
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."
"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure."
-Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
"Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor."
"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."
-Robert F. Kennedy
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failued over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
I hope you fail :D
